4 Ways to Get Motivated to Move (and none have to do with Pokemon…OK 1 might)

Happy Friday! Or as I’ve come to call it, another day to play pokemon go. Summer has turned into stressful (and productive!) work weeks followed by weekend upon weekend of activity with friends and family. This lifestyle has left my heart so full but my body and mind exhausted. I’ve been running on pizza and burgers which is so tasty but makes me feel really sluggish and, in turn, have severely reduced my workouts. Not to panic though; I’m a veteran at falling off the health wagon and am an expert and climbing back on. I looked at a calendar and am about 2 months out from my next race: The Nation’s Triathlon*. I’m starting getting back into eating/training right this week and thought I’d share a few of my tricks for how I get motivated to get moving again. *Update: I have an earlier race! I’m heading out west to visit my sister AND we are BOTH going to be competing in the Lake Tahoe Triathlon. Yay for swimming in water that isn’t potentially toxic! Sunnie’s Tips to …

My Pre-Race Ritual: Eat, Drink and Be Merry

Before my first Tri, I was a hot mess. I looked over my gear 100 x only to realize I had everything except my sanity. I researched what I should be eating and when. I went to be at 9:00 PM only to stay awake, anxious until around 1AM. The race went fine, but I tell you, the 24 hours leading up to that race were miserable. I was too concerned with carb loading, hydrating and resting. So this time, I decided to take a slightly different route before the GW 10 Miler on Sunday. On Friday, I was lucky enough that my sister, Genie, came into town. Genie is a crazy amazing lady and works like a boss on the west coast so seeing her is a real special treat these days. She texted my mom and me earlier in the week letting us know that she was in Syracuse and thought she would “pop down” for the weekend. We were so excited! Genie is usually a pretty healthy/light eater….but I was really craving some …

How to Take a Great Fitness Selfie

Writing this blog is one of my favorite activities these days. I love the creative process of thinking of post topics, writing, editing (although I know my editing skills are laclster lack luster lakluster….bad ), scheduling when they will go live, and seeing a final product. Unfortunately, writing isn’t the only piece of a successful blog. Apparently, you need some good photos to catch the reader’s eye…and I’ve found it to be true. My blog posts where I have the most photos have infinitely more visitors and views than the ones that don’t. Is the art of reading dead!? Is no one reading this!? Oh well, I know my mom always does, so I’ll continue. Thanks mom! I started thinking the other day when choosing photos to insert into a blog post, that I must look like the most self-involved ass clown when taking photos for Just Tri It Once. “Why is that girl taking  taking 543 selfies of herself in front of a that stationary bike?” I’ve realized it is just the the curse of the blogger’s selfie…or the belfie *as I will refer …

Bum foot, Bangs and a Butt Load of Cookies

Yikes! My first time in about 6 months that I’ve gone longer than 6 days without posting. I try pretty hard to stick to a blogging schedule (for my own good…and for you dedicated readers out there…hi mom!) but sometimes, I just can’t. But that is life… plan, be surprised, move forward…repeat. Which takes me to my first update for this week… Turns out that little ache in my pesky foot is a stress fracture. Surprise! It was really crappy piece of news to be delivered especially before 2 races I was REALLY looking forward to. The prognosis is a minor stress fracture. I also learned that my navicular bone is abnormally large which is ironic because my foot is so tiny. But you do know what they say about large navicular bones right? 😉 Yeah, me either. I knew the mechanics of my body were just wrong! These tiny feet weren’t meant to hold my frame! So I’ve been booted for a few weeks but hopefully with some rest, the boot, and some new orthodics …

Running with City Fit Girls

Last year, if you would have asked me if I would go running in a group, I would have finished the pizza I was housing and would have given you a resounding “no”. A lot has changed since last year (not the pizza eating though) and I am now always excited to run with friends, family or complete strangers. Having the company and the accountability during runs is so enjoyable and makes the miles fly by. I was so excited when City Fit Girls announced they were having a pop up run in DC. I had been stalking them on Instagram for awhile and was always jealous of their community. Since they are located in Philadelphia, I never thought I’d have the opportunity to run with them, so when I saw the Instagram announcement, I immediately marked my calendar and started counting down the days. A little about City Fit Girls (CFG) CFG was founded in 2013 by Kiera Smalls  and Takia McClendon, two amazing women who have gained a large fitness following, and for good reason! They are …

I love lamp (and yoga, and caramallows)

Happy almost Valentines Day! Yes I know. It’s not a real  holiday but I’ve always been OK with February 14th; there is always an excess of chocolate floating around, people just seem to be very giddy (or very cynical), flowers are abundant (even though it is 20 degree outside) and it is nice to see an outpour of love (if even in the form of a cheap stuffed animal). I actually really enjoy seeing people loving so much! That said, I’m not especially into celebrating it. In fact, a few years ago I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out (unplanned) on Valentines Day, leaving poor Steven to eat Chick-Fil-A by himself in a mall food court. Then last year,  we went to Chick-Fil-A (voluntarily) with friends to celebrate. It was super fun! (seriously, no sarcasm here…I’m serious!) This year, we planned on going to Chick-Fil-A (recognizing a theme here?) but V-day falls on a Sunday, so that plan is ruined. I guess we need to choose another fast food venue! So to appease both my Valentines lovers …

Just Run With It

I feel like our weather has been like Britney Spear circa 2007: bat shit crazy. (And I say that will all due respect to my main girl Britney… I actually think she produced some great tunes during this time of turmoil. Blackout has got some hot jams.) The mild and then freezing weather made for some interesting workouts, but all in all, a good week of training. Actually, I had a couple awesome runs. Thursday- Run to Friends You know that runner’s high people talk about? That euphoric feeling during or after a difficult or long workout? The feeling of being in absolute bliss even though you are pushing yourself to the limits? Yeah, me either. In fact, Thursday’s run was a 5 mile go that started off terrible. But one thing kept me going: Trivia. Every Thursday  I head to Mr Days in Clarendon with friends for our weekly trivia night. Its a time for all of us to catch up, drink beers for $2, tell horrible jokes and guess at a lot of trivia questions.  I …
