Enter: The Late Twenty-Something

It is official…I’m a late twenty something!

This birthday, I was lucky enough to get to celebrate all weekend long. Steven’s sister, Cathy, and her fiancé, Ted, came into town to hang out with us and partake in the birthday shanagans which made it extra awesome. So here is what went down!

On Saturday, I woke up early to get a quick run with City Fit Girls. It was so amazing running with these great ladies, but you can read more about that here.
After, Steven, Cath, Ted and I took a quick drive over to Ronald Reagan National Airport to experience some serious aviation. If you are from the DC area, or are planning on visiting, I would definitely suggest swinging by Gravely Point Park. This isn’t your run of the mill park. Sure, there are picnic tables to feast on, fields to run around on and plenty of dogs to play with…but there are also huge planes landing right over head! Let me show you…

It is amazing to watch them all come in from the distance, bank and zoom above you. Like RIGHT above you!

It is loud, fun and nothing like you’ve seen before…unless you’ve been here…or are a pilot…then you’ve probably seen it. The park is also right off the of the Mt Vernon trail so there are plenty of runners and cyclists who stop by to take a break to watch the show. If you are planning on running on the Mt Vernon trail, definitely stop by.

After, we putzed around for a bit until our friends started to come over to the apartment to…um… ok….I’m not going to lie to you, they came over to get inebriated, but for good reason! Steven had a special event planned for the main even of the night..

Karaoke.

But more on that in a bit. First, ze cake.

My friend from college, Jarrod, has many talents including an amazing ability to bake delectable treats. Lucky for me, he agreed to provide the cake…and oh boy, provide he did.

This picture does not do justice to the actually size of the cake. This was a three layer, double batch, from scratch, yellow cake with fresh strawberries and cream cheese frosting in between the layers. 4 days later, I’m still eating it and it is STILL delicious.

After everyone got a bit of liquid courage, we headed to Wok N Roll in Chinatown. Steven had set the whole thing up: a private karaoke room for 2 hours for our friends to sing their hearts out. It…was…a…blast.

The 2 hours flew  by and as our last singer finished belting out something that sounded like “Rocket Man,” it was time to go. If you’ve ever wondered what a great activity is to do with friends for an adult birthday, this is it. It’s no surprise really; everyone loves singing along to songs they like (in our case, a lot of Elton John, Journey, Taylor Swift and some Juicy J) AND you get to use a microphone and feel like a rock star. Seriously, it was great.

And it doesn’t have to do with the drinking, I promise!

My mom gave me a surprise party when I was 16 at a Korean karaoke place and it was also a blast! No alcohol was involved and I can tell you, friends still remember that wholesome party! To be honest, a lot of the same people were at my 16th who were at the 27th…

Sunday was a mix of recovering and relaxing. We went to brunch at Liberty Tavern, right up the street from where we live. Steven and I are convinced it is the best brunch you can get in Arlington (and the best brunch I’ve had in the DMV). They have everything from scrambled eggs and bacon, to brunch pizza (pizza with a cracked sunny side egg on top) mussels and the best biscuits and gravy. Seriously, their scrambled eggs are just sitting in one of those banquet heaters and still taste like they were right of the skillet. YUM.

On Tuesday, Steven had a surprise dinner for me and had me meet him at a neutral location so we could walk together and he could keep it a surprise. We ended up at my FAVORITE restaurant, Zaytinya. Located in between Metro Center and China town, this Mediterranean tapas restaurant always makes me smile and leaves me wanting to come back for more. We ended up with 6 small plates: octopus, shrimp, cauliflower, meatballs, sausages and hummus.  It was a delicious dinner that left my tummy and heart so full.Thank you, Steven!

Also random side note: over the weekend I had two cocktails that were cucumber based and they were DELICIOUS. Anyone have good cucumber cocktail recipes?? I’m addicted!
